NorthWest Tree Clinic recently returned to a local private fishery and farm to carry out ongoing estate and vegetation management. The work brought together planting aftercare, flailing, strimming and professional tree pruning to keep the wider estate accessible, well maintained and developing positively for the future.
Work Completed
A range of maintenance works were completed across the farm and fishery, including:
- Aftercare of a native hedgerow planted around three years ago
- Removal of tree guards where they were no longer required
- Mulching around established hedgerow plants
- Strimming around younger native trees to reduce competition
- Retaining guards and stakes where continued protection was required
- Flailing fields and larger areas of vegetation
- Strimming tracks, lanesides and more restricted areas
- Clearing vegetation around the fishery banking to improve access to the water
- Crown lifting trees to maintain vehicle clearance
- Structural pruning to encourage good future form and development
Two different self-powered flails were used behind the quad, allowing us to combine efficient vegetation clearance across larger areas with the manoeuvrability required for tighter and more difficult sections of the estate.
Ongoing Hedgerow and Tree Planting Aftercare
Around three years ago, NorthWest Tree Clinic established a new native hedgerow along one of the field boundaries.
Returning for aftercare is an important part of successful establishment. Guards that were no longer needed were removed, while mulch was applied around the established plants.
Mulching helps suppress competing vegetation, retain moisture within the soil and improve conditions around the developing root zone.
Elsewhere on the estate, younger native trees were carefully strimmed around to reduce competition from grass and surrounding vegetation. Guards and stakes were retained on trees that still required additional protection and support.
Improving Access Around the Fishery and Farm
Vegetation management was also carried out across the wider site, including fields, tracks, lanesides and the banking surrounding the fishery.
Regular flailing and strimming helps prevent these areas becoming excessively overgrown while maintaining practical access for vehicles, machinery and people using the estate.
Around the pond, managing the banks also provided clearer access down towards the water while maintaining the wider rural character of the site.
Professional Tree Pruning Across the Estate
Various tree pruning works were completed alongside the vegetation management.
This included crown lifting where additional clearance was required for vehicles, as well as structural pruning to help encourage suitable future form as trees continue to mature.
Combining arboricultural work with wider grounds and vegetation management allows the estate to be considered as a whole rather than treating each area separately.
