Commercial Vegetation Clearance in Burnley Beside a Conservation Area

NorthWest Tree Clinic completed sensitive commercial vegetation clearance in Burnley, thinning boundary growth, pruning trees away from a building and reusing woody arisings to support the surrounding woodland habitat.

NorthWest Tree Clinic recently completed commercial vegetation clearance in Burnley for a property bordering a conservation area.

Following an on-site meeting with the borough’s green space manager, an agreed programme of work was put in place to thin the boundary vegetation and prune trees away from the building. The aim was to provide a longer-lasting clearance while retaining the important woodland structure around the site.

Work Completed

The work included:

  • Thinning young and congested boundary vegetation
  • Pruning branches away from the commercial building
  • Creating practical clearance for future maintenance
  • Distributing woodchip arisings across the woodland floor
  • Constructing habitat piles from suitable woody material

By creating a more manageable boundary, future work should involve straightforward prune-backs rather than repeated heavy clearance.

Why This Work Was Needed

Vegetation had begun to encroach towards the building, making ongoing maintenance more difficult.

Selective thinning and pruning created a healthier separation between the property and the surrounding trees. This provided a more sustainable solution while allowing retained trees and vegetation to continue developing.

The work also improved access around the boundary and reduced the likelihood of branches and dense young growth reaching the building again in the near future.

Supporting the Woodland Environment

Woodchip produced during the work was scattered across suitable areas of the woodland floor.

As it breaks down, woodchip can help retain soil moisture, suppress competing weeds and support fungi such as mycorrhizae. These fungi play an important role in helping trees access water and essential nutrients.

Reducing dense competing vegetation and suppressing weeds can also give young native trees a better opportunity to establish and thrive.

Habitat piles were constructed throughout the woodland using suitable woody arisings. These provide valuable shelter and decaying timber habitat for a wide range of woodland species, including stag beetles, which are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
